About Mitre Peak
Mitre Peak is one of the most striking landmarks in the Davis Mountains, located about eleven miles southeast of Fort Davis in southeastern Jeff Davis County. Rising to 6,196 feet, the peak stands approximately 1,600 feet above the surrounding terrain, creating a dramatic silhouette that has drawn attention for generations.
Formed as a volcanic intrusion later exposed by erosion, Mitre Peak’s name comes from its resemblance to a bishop's mitre, a peaked ceremonial hat. Set in the rugged beauty of West Texas, with oaks, scrub brush and native grasses, the mountain has unparalleled views of the Trans-Pecos from its shoulders and peak. Standing atop Mitre Peak, the prominent mountain between Alpine and Fort Davis, climbers are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of Brewster, Jeff Davis, and Presidio counties with its sweeping vistas and rugged beauty.
Hiking Information
Mitre Peak is on private property owned by Mitre Peak Ranch, LP, a family-owned partnership in the same family for well over one hundred years but is available for climbing and hiking opportunities with permission. Climbing Mitre Peak is fun but demanding. The route to the summit requires strong balance, good physical stamina, and uneven terrain including stretches of hand-over-foot rock climbing. There is paved access to the base of Mitre Peak along Ranch Road 1837.
Because of the challenging landscape, a guide is required unless you are an expert-level climber. There is only one route to the summit that can be completed without climbing equipment, and guides can show hikers the correct path to avoid cliffs that otherwise require climbing gear. Even this path is not merely a hike and substantial rock climbing is required.

The hiking fee is $75/per person, and a signed release form and engagement of a guide is required absent a waiver of the guide requirement. Any guides are independent contractors and fees they may charge are extra.
